Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny little girl. This forced her mother to provide for the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student there. But she quit school only after two years to take on a acting career. The path she chose was filled with challenges. After obtaining a position at New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to secure jobs on stage. After that, she was a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was her first gig as a regular actor. Earned money doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She studied drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
